“Let’s buy local, eat local, feed Salone”- Chief Minister encourages Sierra Leoneans

Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has encouraged Sierra Leoneans to buy, eat and grow local rice to feed Sierra Leone.

Giving updates on the Torma Bum project, Dr. Sengeh said two integrated rice mills and three large warehouses have been installed. He said four thousand hectares large-scale irrigation is currently ongoing and that they are building a new rice cluster for processing, bagging, among other facilities.

The chief minister went on that over one thousand bags of Torma Bum are rice now available, while re-echoing his call for Sierra Leoneans to start buying and eating local rice.

The Project, launched on 11th June 2021, is a Regional Rice Value Chain Project worth $34.1 million and is meant to directly benefit 7,000 women and youth farmers, along with 35,000 farming families who are growing rice on 35,000 hectares of farmlands in the project locations. 

Torma Bum, located in the Southern Province of Sierra Leone, is the site of the Sierra Leone Regional Rice Value Chain Project, a $34.1 million initiative aimed at boosting rice production and food security, particularly benefiting women and youth farmers.
