In a decisive move to combat drug-related issues within the community, Magistrate Court No. 1 in Kenema has authorized the burning of a significant quantity of illegal drug exhibits.
This action, directed by Magistrate Shiaka P. Kamara, aligns with the National Drugs Control Act of 2008, aiming to eliminate the circulation of dangerous substances.
The Regional Police Commander for the Eastern Region, AIG Andrew M. Kamara, provided security for the event, which took place under the jurisdiction of the Magistrate Court. Law enforcement agencies had recently confiscated the drugs, which included 9 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa in six bundles, along with other illegal substances, during various raids and checkpoints in the Kenema Division.
Magistrate Kamara emphasized the necessity of destroying these drugs to prevent their potential reentry into the community.
“This action sends a clear message that such substances are not tolerated here,” said the Regional Crime Officer for the East, DSP Mohamed Hindolo Feika.
He highlighted the court’s commitment to supporting the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in their ongoing fight against crime and promoting a healthy environment for all residents.
The controlled burn was coordinated by staff from Magistrate Court No. 1 and SLP Prosecutor Inspector Alphan Samuel Musa. The event attracted significant attention, with representatives from the media and local stakeholders present to witness the court’s efforts in combating substance abuse.
The action underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and judicial authorities in addressing the challenges posed by illegal drugs in the community.
