Three hours of heavy rains in Makeni city, Northern Sierra Leone has caused serious flooding in some parts of the city, leaving properties valued millions of leones destroyed and many people homeless.

Major places like Lower John Street, Molala Road, Magburaka Road, Agriculture Road, Kojo Street, Teko Road, Milton Street, Rogbaneh Road and Savage Square among other are badly affected.

The ugly development has been largely blamed on negative effect of climate change and deforestation.

Reports say the Bombali School for the Blind Boarding Home has also been badly affected by the flooding but no confirmation of the height of the damage and some parts of the city faced a similar effect.

The Makeni City Council has been embarking on cleaning the canals before and during the rainy season to mitigate flooding but seems more needs to be done with the support from its central government and other partners.

However, the Council has received three waste management vehicles from the central government as part of its effort to help mitigate flooding/waste.

Residents have raised their voices calling on the central government through the Local Government and Community Affairs together with other development partners to see the need for more support.
