Now as the nation heads towards a presidential runoff election between the main opposition SLPP and the ruling party APC presidential candidates, Maada Bio and Samura Kamara respectively, it is interesting to note that divisions are beginning to show within NGC ranks. While the party’s executive stated at a recent press conference that it is not going to declare support for either of the presidential candidates that would be participating at the runoff election, there are a number of NGC members that have come out to publicly throw their support behind the SLPP. Others have been heard of throwing their support behind the APC. The NGC executive on the other hand is denying that those that are joining ranks and declaring their support for either the APC or the SLPP are not NGC members. But the NGC members that have declared support for other political parties are of contrary view.

Although it is the right of every citizen to vote who they wish at the presidential runoff election slated for 31st March, 2018 and the NGC has instructed its membership to vote their conscience, the NGC cannot rule out the fact that its members are likely to vote either for the APC or the SLPP. And though it is the right of the NGC executive not to declare or vote for either of the presidential candidates that would be going to the runoff election; do they have the right or moral standing to tell their members to follow suit and not vote for the APC or the SLPP at the runoff when those members want to exercise their franchise?

It cannot be disputed that most of the membership of the NGC were former SLPP and APC members with some others drawn from other political parties; while some were not members of any political party but joined the NGC as a first choice for reasons best known to them. At this juncture, it should be mentioned that even though the NGC is loathe confirming that its members are leaving the party to throw support behind either the APC or SLPP presidential candidates; this is the stark reality staring the NGC in their face.

While the presidential candidate of the NGC lost the elections, he feels confident that he and his other candidates that won parliamentary seats are prepping themselves to be a very formidable opposition force in the next parliament that would seek change and at the same time support any policy that seeks the welfare and transformation of the lives of Sierra Leoneans.

The fact remains that even though NGC members have left the party to support other parties, the NGC presidential candidate shall be the leader for the NGC opposition in the next parliament and Sierra Leoneans are looking forward to a parliament that would be full of fireworks and fiery debates not seen in a long time.
