Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio made a humble plea for compassion for Muslim women as the holy month of Ramadan commenced on March 1, 2025.
“Let us take a moment to remember how our women have always been our greatest support, helping to ensure a smooth Ramadan,” Bio said on Facebook.
He called on Sierra Leonean Muslim men to be just to their women this Ramadan while also praying for a blessed Ramadan.
“As we enter this new month of fasting, may our prayers be answered, and may the blessings of Allah guide us through this holy month,” the President noted.
Bio, a practicing Catholic, is married to Fatima, a devout Muslim. Their relationship exemplifies a harmonious bond despite their differing religious beliefs, highlighting the couple’s deep love and mutual respect.
This union serves as a testament to the religious tolerance prevalent in Sierra Leonean society, where diverse faiths can coexist peacefully.
Sierra Leone is a country where over 75 percent of the population identifies as Muslim. Each year, Muslims in Sierra Leone observe Ramadan with great reverence, participating in daily fasting from dawn until dusk. The duration of the fast can last either 29 or 30 days, depending on the Islamic lunar calendar.
