His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, engaged the Ethiopian leadership on his ‘Big Five’ priorities especially Agriculture and Food Security.
This was as part of several bilateral meetings he held on the margins of the Africa Human Capital Heads of State Summit.
The President tweeted: “I had a refreshing engagement with the Sierra Leone Under-19 cricket team in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I was inspired by the zeal, determination and national pride of the talented young cricketers as they strive to make their mark on the international stage.
“Their passion and desire to make our country proud was very palpable. My government’s commitment to nurturing and promoting young talents remains unwavering. We are resolute in our desire to harness the benefits and potentials inherent in the soft power that our young people present through sports and arts.
“We shall continue to create abundant job opportunities, providing our young talents with a platform to flourish and contribute to our nation’s progress. Our unwavering commitment to this mission extends to nurturing patriotism, fostering national pride and cultivating resilience among our young populace”.
President Bio used his engagement with Mr. Demeke Mekonnen Hassen, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to congratulate Ethiopia on their success of wheat production.
President Bio said Ethiopia has set a bright example of good practice that Sierra Leone could learn from, especially now that Agriculture and Food Security were among the ‘Big Five’ priorities that were listed in his 2023 Elections Manifesto priorities.
President Bio further noted that the success of Ethiopia’s health insurance scheme could provide lessons for Sierra Leone.
The President also pitched on the importance of the proposed expansion of Ethiopian Airlines to serve Freetown International Airport.
During the engagement, the Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister said Ethiopia’s Green Legacy on climate change had seen 25 billion trees planted in the last 5 years, adding that there was also the ‘Basket of Abundance’ project, with each home engaging in agriculture and planting vegetables, the ‘Quality Education’ for the new generation and the successful Health Insurance programmes.
The two leaders reflected on discussions they had in 2019 when the Deputy Prime Minister had led a high-powered delegation to Sierra Leone on a two-day working State Visit that had entailed high-level inter-ministerial meetings with ministries, departments and agencies to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
