Despite some progress, Sierra Leone’s students are simply not learning enough in schools to be able to help the country to grow – a Learning Assessment conducted earlier this year found that only around 15% or less of Junior Secondary School students are operating at grade level in English and maths, with girls consistently lagging behind boys.

The books have been designed to accompany the lesson plans in English and maths which the UK has already supported as part of the Leh Wi Learn programme in junior and secondary schools. Teachers are being trained to use these lesson plans by coaches who are visiting classrooms on a regular basis. The UK will also support the Government to produce braille copies of the handbooks so that they are easily accessible to children who are blind or partially sighted – so that their needs are met and they can learn and flourish like everyone else.

Speaking at the event Mary Hunt, Head of DFID in Sierra Leone said: “The UK is proud to be working with the Government of Sierra Leone on their flagship initiative to provide free access, quality instruction and learning materials and a safe school environment.” She added “Our support is focused on improving learning outcomes, and ensuring girls and children with disabilities, can stay in school and pass their examinations.”
