President Dr. Julius Maada Bio yesterday Monday dismissed three top government officials, including Mohamed Orman Bangura, the Minister of Youth Affairs, amid growing controversy over the recent Youth Ambassador travel scandal.
The sackings, confirmed in an official notice from State House, also affected Moriba Koroma, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, and Ahmed Saybom Kamz, Managing Director of Sierra Leone National Shipping Company.
While the government has not provided official reasons for their removal, speculation is rife that the youth minister’s dismissal is linked to the mismanagement of a government-sponsored youth delegation’s overseas trip.
The controversy erupted after reports surfaced that a government-funded youth delegation, led by officials under the Ministry of Youth Affairs, allegedly mismanaged travel arrangements, with concerns over embezzlement of funds, selection bias, and last-minute cancellations that left several young delegates stranded.
There have also been allegations of favoritism in the selection process, with claims that some chosen ambassadors had political connections rather than merit-based qualifications.
Public outcry grew as affected youths and their families voiced frustration over the Ministry’s handling of the situation, questioning the transparency of the entire process. The backlash reportedly prompted a high-level investigation within the presidency, ultimately leading to Bangura’s removal.
The sacking of the youth minister signals a major shakeup in the government’s approach to youth affairs, a crucial sector given the country’s rising unemployment rate and ongoing social challenges. The move is also seen as an attempt by President Bio to regain public trust and show his administration’s commitment to accountability ahead of key national reforms.
Opposition figures and civil society organisations have called for a full audit of the Youth Ministry’s activities, demanding clarity on how public funds meant for youth development are being utilised. Meanwhile, political analysts believe this could be the beginning of a broader government reshuffle.
There have also been concerns over former youth minister’s involvement in the recent SLPP lower level elections which were married by violence
As the dust settles, attention now turns to who will replace Bangura as the new Minister of Youth Affairs and how the government will restore confidence in its youth empowerment programs.
