In a plenary session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, All People’s Congress (APC) Party Member of Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, urged ECOWAS to prioritise the implementation of the Agreement for a National Unity in Sierra Leone.

Hon. Koroma said the Agreement, signed between the Government of Sierra Leone and the main opposition, the All People’s Congress Party, comprises eight resolutions aimed at fostering national cohesion and stability.

He said majority of these resolutions remain unimplemented, a situation he finds deeply concerning, stressing the urgency for ECOWAS to intervene and ensure that every clause in the Agreement is honored.

This, the honourable member said, is essential for achieving lasting peace and unity in the country.

Furthermore, he called on ECOWAS to extend its protective measures to former presidents in all member states, citing the specific cases of Sierra Leone and Liberia, where former leaders are often barred from accessing Presidential Lodges, a situation that he said, undermines their dignity and status.

He advocated for a policy that allows former heads of state to live in their home countries without fear of political retribution.

The Parliamentarian also pointed out the significant influence former Presidents wield through their substantial fan bases. He posited that ensuring their protection and well-being is not just a matter of personal security, but also a crucial step towards maintaining political stability in member states.
