As a way of supporting Muslims across Sierra Leone for the Eid Ul-Adha feast, the Shri Gurudwara Sahib Sierra Leone donated hundreds of bags of rice to over twenty Mosques.
The event, held at the Jeety Trading Company in Lumley, brought together Muslim leaders, members of the Indian community and well-wishers to celebrate the occasion with unity, charity and shared values. Each Mosque received ten 25kg bags of rice to support their congregations during the Eid festivities.
The beneficiary Mosques included: Jamieu Rahim Funkia, Central Mosque Lumley, Fullah Mosque Grass field, Masjid Ridwan, Masjid Musa Gbendembu, Masjid Farook MajayTown, Masjid Rahman Crab Town, Masjid Khalid 7 Battalion, Masjid Ekwatu Black Tank, Masjid Rashideen Metchem, Masjid Sahaba Wilkinson Road, Masjid Kuba Juba, Masjid Iklas Pipeline, Masjid Tauba, Masjid Nurullah Regent Road, Voice of Islam, Masjid Thohid Kissy, Ahmadiyya Mosque Pipeline, Masjid Abu Bakarr Thunder Hill, and Masjid Salam Angola.
Mohinder Bir Singh Sachdeva, fondly called Pa Jeety, CEO of Jeety Trading Company, and head of Shri Gurudwara Sahib Lumley, said, “I may not be a Muslim, but I have deep respect for this important occasion. Eid-ul-Adha teaches us about faith, helping others and coming together as one community. These are values that belong to all of us, not just to one religion.”
He said the donation was not just an act of charity, but a symbol of peaceful coexistence and interreligious respect, while extending his gratitude to M.K Stores on Sani Abacha Street and other Indian nationals for their continued support in the rice donation initiative.
He said since June 2017, when he started business in Lumley, he has been aiming to give back to the community from the small profit he makes, saying: “Coming from the Sikh religion in Indian, we believe in our 3 Sikh guiding principles which include: “Always remember God throughout the day; earn your livelihood through hard work and by honest means; and to selflessly serve and share with others especially with those less fortunate than yourself.”
This, according to Mr. Sachdeva is what initiated the rice donations, scholarship and also support to medical needs to sick children.
Pa Jeety said, “Let us keep this spirit alive, of kindness, unity and peace in Sierra Leone and beyond”.
Sharoz Ansari, CEO of Alhamd Group, underlined the importance of religious values and selflessness. He noted that Eid-ul-Adha is not only about the sacrifice of animals but also about sacrificing bad habits and embracing righteousness to please Allah.
He said, “No religion teaches wrongdoing. The Indian community, especially Jeety Trading, has continued to show compassion and generosity. This support uplifts people regardless of background or belief.”
Representing the beneficiary Mosques, one of the imams expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the Islamic community. He praised the organisations for their generosity and emphasised the meaningful impact of the donation, particularly for families in need during the festive season.
“Your contributions have made a significant impact on the lives of many,” said the Imam. “We appreciate everything you do for the Imams and the community, contributing to our well-being, protection and prosperity.”
The Sikh religion is one of the youngest world religions and was founded more than 500 years ago (1469) in Punjab, North India, by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in response to a spiritual revelation. Nanak and his nine successors are known as ‘gurus’, which is a term for a spiritual guide or teacher.
Sikhism is the world’s fifth-largest religion. The word ‘Sikh’ means ‘learner’ or ‘seeker of truth’. Sikhism advocates equality, social justice and service to humanity, and tolerance for other religions.
