In a continued effort to combat the rising cases of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), Sierra Leone has received an additional 50,000 doses of the MVA-BN vaccine. This latest consignment, delivered with the support of international health partners, marks another major step in protecting the population and constraining the spread of the disease.

In February this year, the country received an initial shipment of 61,300 doses. With this new batch, Sierra Leone now has over 111,000 doses available, a significant boost for its public health response.

The vaccine, known for its effectiveness in preventing the mpox virus, will be used in targeted immunization campaigns, especially in high-risk areas. According to health officials, the rollout will prioritize frontline workers, vulnerable groups, and communities experiencing recent outbreaks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Sierra Leone continues to work closely with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to coordinate response efforts, including surveillance, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns.

Mpox is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms and a distinctive rash. While treatable, it can spread quickly without proper prevention, making vaccination a key tool in the fight against further outbreaks.

This new delivery is not just a shipment of vaccines, it’s a symbol of hope, resilience, and commitment to public health in Sierra Leone.
