Sierra Leone has proudly assumed a leadership role as co-chair of the Global Council for Responsible Transition Minerals (GCRSM), a pivotal body that unites companies, governments, international organizations, and civil society from both the Global North and the Global South. This council aims to harness collective experience and influence to advocate for a collaborative global approach to the challenges posed by the essential role of transition minerals in achieving the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement.

At the forefront of this initiative is Sierra Leone’s Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF), who is actively contributing to the council’s mission of formulating global recommendations and proposing collaborative solutions across five key workstreams. These workstreams emphasize the importance of cooperation among organizations focused on transition minerals.

The GCRSM operates independently of any state or industry interests, ensuring that its focus remains on addressing the critical issues surrounding transition minerals as they relate to the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

Honorable Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, with over two decades of expertise and experience in the field, has been instrumental in securing this esteemed global leadership role for Sierra Leone within the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC). This achievement mirrors the country’s previous success at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) under the distinguished leadership of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio.

Dr. Kandeh Yumkella is commended for his unwavering dedication to global green energy initiatives and his steadfast commitment to President Julius Maada Bio’s vision for a sustainable and prosperous Sierra Leone. His leadership not only enhances Sierra Leone’s reputation on the international stage but also reinforces the nation’s commitment to a greener future for all.
