Sierra Leone has delivered its first statement at the United Nation Security Council (UNSC).

Speaking at the Council, Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative, His Excellency Dr. Michael I. Kanu emphasised dedication to constructive engagement, recalled UNSC’s 1 Dec. 2023 condemnation of Houthi attacks, called for immediate release of abducted crews and prevention of Red Sea incidents affecting Yemeni Peace Process and urged regional actors to exercise restraint for stability.

Sierra Leone’s inaugural UNSC address prioritises constructive diplomacy and encourages regional restraint for sustained stability.

In another engagement, H.E Dr. Kanu warmly welcomed and engaged in a constructive meeting with his counterpart, H.E. Ms. Cecilia Adeng, the Permanent Representative (Designate) of South Sudan to the United Nations. Commending her recent promotion from Deputy Permanent Representative, they explored shared interests, including Security Council matters and developments in South Sudan.

Sierra Leone eagerly anticipates collaborating with South Sudan, sharing expertise in implementing peace processes, fostering political dialogue, and ensuring peace and stability in post-conflict context.

As an acknowledgement of the Government of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio’s steadfast dedication to global peace and security, Sierra Leone’s flag again flutters in the Chamber of the UN Security Council (UNSC).

As of January 1, 2024, Sierra Leone took her seat as an Elected Non-Permanent Member of the UNSC for the second time in our nation’s storied history. This is a strong recognition of Sierra Leone’s remarkable progress, particularly under the leadership of President Bio and a shining symbol for nations overcoming adversity.

The government and great people of Sierra Leone pledge to work towards an effective tenure and reaffirmed commitment to Africa’s Common Agenda for UNSC reform.
