The Sierra Leone judiciary and legal community are grieving today following the passing of Hon. Justice Abubakarr Binneh Kamara, a respected High Court judge, who died at Choithram Memorial Hospital in Freetown.

Justice Kamara had a distinguished career in the Sierra Leonean legal system. Prior to his tenure at the High Court, he served as a magistrate, where he presided over sensitive cases involving domestic violence and sexual offences, demonstrating deep commitment to upholding justice.

In April 2025, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal alongside other legal luminaries such as Alfred Tommy Ganda and Aiah Simeon Allieu.

Known for his adherence to constitutional principles, Justice Kamara was instrumental in interpreting and enforcing the rule of law. His lectures on constitutional law were respected in academic circles, and he emphasized the importance of institutional checks and balances enshrined in the 1991 Constitution.

Legacy and Remembrance

Champion of Legal Rigor: As a magistrate and later as a High Court judge, Kamara earned a reputation for meticulous fairness, particularly in high-stakes cases involving violence against women and minors.

Builder of Legal Integrity: His academic work and public lectures underlined his dedication to democratic governance and constitutional rights, underscoring his belief in accountability among government institutions.

Justice Kamara’s passing leaves a void in Sierra Leone’s judiciary. Colleagues remember him as a forthright jurist with a profound sense of duty and a clear-sighted understanding of law’s role in society.

Funeral arrangements are forthcoming and will be overseen by the Judiciary of Sierra Leone. The legal fraternity extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and peers.
