Sierra Leone: Over 3,400 Mpox cases, 17 deaths

 The Government of Sierra Leone has reported 1 new death case of Mpox in its latest health update, and confirmed 62 New Cases, bringing the cumulative total to 3,482 cases since the outbreak began.

The report, released on Saturday, May 31, 2025, also recorded 22 new recoveries, signalling the effort of the government in combating the disease in the country.

The 1 new death confirmed has brought the cumulative total to 17 deaths, and 1,664 active cases since the outbreak of the disease.

While the update did not specify district-level breakdowns for the new cases, previous reports highlighted the Western Rural and Western Urban areas as the most affected areas.

The report further confirmed recorded cases in all the districts across Sierra Leone.

The virus is a major challenge for the Sierra Leone health sector, with experts warning locals to avoid complacency.

The health ministry has taken commendable steps to curb the spread of the virus, including the vaccination of health workers. However, as cases continue to surge, there is a growing concern for the vaccination of the entire population, especially the Western Area, which is the current epicentre of the virus.
