Sierra Leone passes Industrial Relations, Union Act into Law

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has debated and unanimously passed into law with some amendments the Bill entitled: ‘The Industrial Relations and Union Act, 2024’.

The Bill is seeking to repeal the regulations of Wages and the Industrial Relations Act, 1971 (Act No.18 of 1971), and the Trade Union Act (Cap 221).

Presenting the Second Report of the Legislative Committee to the Committee of the Whole House, the Chairman of the said Committee, Hon. Abdul Sulaiman Marray-Conteh said the Bill had gone through scrutiny and several thoughtful amendments including meanings, contents, composition of administration and Board, clauses, wages and salaries, fines, and tenure of office amongst others.

The Chairman also told the plenary that issues or concerns of doubts were seriously considered.

The Bill was earlier debated comprehensively and a lot of stakeholders consulted before passage into law with meaningful amendments.

The Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swarray piloted the Bill.
