As Sierra Leone assumes the prestigious role as President of United Nations Security Council today, the country’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio has said its primary objective is to foster productive dialogue among member states.
He said the focus will be on creating an environment of mutual trust and respect, which is essential for achieving peaceful and sustainable resolutions to conflicts.
Today, Sierra Leone is embarking on a momentous journey as it takes the helm of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August, taking over from the Russian Federation for the month of July and handing over in September to Slovenia.
This historic milestone marks the first time in over half a century that Sierra Leone will preside over the agenda-setting, meetings, and activities of the world’s foremost body dedicated to maintaining international peace and security.
The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated, as it represents a pivotal moment in the nation’s history and its growing influence on the global stage.
President Bio said: “Our objective is to foster productive dialogue among parties, based on mutual trust and respect that result in peaceful and sustainable resolutions of conflict and for collectively tackling other global challenges.
“We will also work closely with the P5 and regional groups as we vigorously pursue Security Council reform for the inclusive, equitable, and permanent representation of the voices of Africa’s 1.2 billion people. 79 years after the founding of the United Nations, now is the time to right this historical injustice”.
By promoting collaborative discussions, Sierra Leone aims to address various global challenges that threaten peace and stability. The nation’s leadership is committed to ensuring that the Security Council’s decisions reflect the collective will and aspirations of the international community.
In addition to steering the Council’s daily operations, Sierra Leone is set to engage closely with the Permanent Five (P5) members and regional groups. A key priority for Sierra Leone during its presidency is to vigorously pursue reforms of the Security Council. This includes advocating for the inclusive, equitable, and permanent representation of Africa’s 1.2 billion people.
Recognising the long-standing imbalance in global governance structures, Sierra Leone is determined to champion the cause for greater African representation in the Security Council, asserting that 79 years after the founding of the United Nations, it is time to rectify this historical injustice.
Sierra Leone’s presidency of the Security Council is not only a testament to its diplomatic capabilities but also a beacon of hope for other nations striving for greater representation and equity in international affairs.
As the nation leads the Council, it brings with it a wealth of experience in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, underpinned by its own journey of recovery and resilience. The world watches with anticipation as Sierra Leone steps into this leadership role, ready to make a meaningful impact on global peace and security.
