The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has at its 2023 Statutory Ordinary Congress agreed to cut down on the number of Premier League Teams to participate in the next competition.
The Congress attracted Minister of Sports, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh, Executive Director of the National Sports Authority Dr. Kenneth Brima and the President of the National Olympic Committee Prince Suallay, along with other important stakeholders.
The focus of the Congress was the development of the country’s football, specifically the adoption of a new football ecosystem.
The new system seeks to gradually reduce teams in the Sierra Leone Premier League from the current 18 teams to 12 teams by the 2025/26 league season.
This was unanimously embraced by the delegates as some of them described the system as “a step in the right direction.”
SLFA President, Thomas Daddy Brima disclosed to congress developmental projects that will soon be implemented including the construction of new artificial turf pitches at the SLFA Academy Field, approved School Field, Port Loko Town Field, and Bo Coronation Field.
Brima also announced that the Kono artificial turf pitch will be renovated with a perimeter fence, while the Kenema pitch will be equipped with standard floodlights.
The said projects are set to commence in August 2023 as the Netherland based contractors representing Edel Grass are expected to arrive in Freetown on between July 7th-10th July to complete the necessary documentations.
The congress, seen as a success, was lauded as a renewed commitment to developing football in Sierra Leone.
