In a bid to enhance road safety and ensure that vehicles plying Sierra Leone’s roads are roadworthy, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has launched a two-week Free Road Safety Checklist initiative for drivers.

The launch took place at the Mike 38 police checkpoint. It was led by the Authority’s Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Josie Scott Manga, on behalf of the Executive Director and the Authority’s management.

The initiative forms part of ongoing reforms in road safety education spearheaded by the SLRSA. During the two-week campaign, vehicle examiners from the Authority will offer free inspections to assess the roadworthiness of vehicles and advise drivers on necessary safety improvements, the Deputy Executive Director informed.

According to the Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Scott-Manga, the Executive Director and the management of SLRSA, are committed to making Sierra Leone’s roads accident-free. “To achieve this vision, it is essential that all vehicles on our roads meet basic safety and maintenance standards,” he said.

Also, speaking at the event, Director of Transport SLRSA, Arthur Brima emphasised that the safety checklist has been made freely available to all vehicle examiners. “Drivers will not be charged for the inspections,” he stated. “This gives them an excellent opportunity to identify and fix mechanical issues that may compromise safety.”

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Adams Bangura, officer commanding the Magbontoso Police post at Mile 38 Check Point, praised the initiative and commended the SLRSA for continuing to collaborate closely with the Sierra Leone Police. “This is a laudable and timely intervention,” he noted. “Ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy can go a long way in reducing road accidents.”

The SLRSA has commissioned trained vehicle examiners to carry out inspections throughout the two-week exercise, which is expected to benefit thousands of drivers and contribute significantly to safer roads across the country.
