The day-long strike caused loss of income for business people and disrupted business including school activities and further disrupted commercial activities across the city. Government and private workers were also seriously affected.
SLRSA Public Relations Officer, Abdul Karim Dumbuya, informed AYV that the Authority is determined to enforce safety regulations for passengers in all commercial transport, adding that the SLRSA will stop at nothing to ensure it carries out its mandate to the fullest.
He added that the SLRSA has deployed its personnel countrywide to ensure that vehicles with metal seats are taken off the roads until they are fitted with the requisite comfortable passenger seats. He maintained that vehicle owners that fail to comply will have their vehicles impounded.
Mr. Dumbuya went on to say that all vehicles must be roadworthy, and that those which are not, will be arrested and fined Le500, 000.
While implementation of this policy by the SLRSA has received wide acclaim from the general public, saying metals seats must become a thing of the past as they are dangerous.
According to Mr. Dumbuya, henceforth, when license of commercial vehicles (poda podas) expire, the SLRA would not renew license of vehicles that have metal seats.
