The Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the ongoing renovation of the SiakaStevens Stadium.

Speaking during a special visit to the stadium, the Minister was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Works, the National Sports Authority, the National Olympic Committee, and the Sierra Leone Football Association.

During the visit, Madam James-Teima expressed her gratitude to the Chinese construction firm, Ghanzou Company, for their cooperation and transparency in allowing stakeholders and the public to witness the progress of the rehabilitation project.

“This stadium is a national treasure. We don’t have another facility of this standard, which is why it is so important to complete it to the highest quality,” she said. “My Ministry, along with the Ministry of Works, is committed to keeping the people of Sierra Leone informed about the developments.”

The Minister James-Teima emphasized the importance of completing the stadium not only for national pride but also for Sierra Leone’s ability to host international football matches. She noted that hosting games outside the country has a negative impact on team morale and national support.

“When our Leone Stars play abroad, they lack the home support that inspires peak performance. Additionally, hosting matches at home helps boost the economy – from local vendors to employment opportunities,” she explained.

One of the critical elements delaying the handover of the stadium is the installation of the seats a requirement mandated by both CAF and FIFA. Madam James-Teima revealed that bidding for the seating installation is currently underway.

“Football is the biggest sport in our country. Without proper seating, we cannot meet international standards. We’ve re-engaged with our Chinese partners to make sure they understand the urgency, and we truly appreciate the Government of China for their continued support,” she added.

The Minister concluded by expressing confidence that the stadium will be completed soon, assuring Sierra Leoneans that all efforts are being made to meet international requirements and bring football back home.
