Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has called on Sierra Leoneans to stop using invectives (Mammy Cuss), especially on public officials and governments, while encouraging all to embrace civic education, action and responsibility.
Dr. Sengeh said: “We don’t need to agree with each other or be friends with each other, or like each other whether within or without our parties, but please stop using “mammy cuss”. Because what would become of our country if we are known for “mammy cuss”, so those bad actions are not civic actions”.
He recalled the reforms initiated that led to the formation of the National Council for Civic Education and change of portfolio to the Ministry of information and Civic Education and the creation of the Civic Education Framework by President Julius Maada Bio in 2023.
To achieve the goal of Civic Education in the Educational sector, he said books were printed; pupils taught and teachers trained but went on to underscore the fact that many people have not fully understood the concept of civic education, action and responsibility.
He emphasised the fact that civic education, action and responsibility enjoin good behavior on citizens because a country would not exist without it citizens and there would be no progress where the people are not doing positive things.
Dr. Sengeh dilated on citizens’ responsibility to each other and the government where disagreement amongst one another should not result in the usage of abusive language.
He stressed on the fact that laws exist to shape the civic action of people and call attention to some provisions in the cyber-crime law that prohibit cyber-bullying and defamation which are chargeable offences.
Dr. David Sengeh called attention to the fact that some people normally accuse others falsely of being gay without any evidence by displaying pictures on social media.
He categorically stated that being a homosexual is a crime in Sierra Leone and by way of falsely accusing somebody of being a homosexual and trying to get the person arrested is also a crime.
“It doesn’t matter if we don’t agree with people but let us don’t defame their character,” Dr. David Sengeh appealed.
He highlighted that the plethora of motherly invectives nowadays is not a civic action and disagreement is a natural fact of life because he sometimes disagree even with family members.
He urged all and sundry to undertake good civic action to their neighbours by loving them as they love themselves, eschew motherly invectives and to extend the same to the government.
Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh thanked President Julius Maada Bio for ensuring the return of civic education and prayed so that the children would have better etiquette.
