The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield is set to traverse Guinea-Bissau, Liberia and Sierra Leone from January 21-26, 2024.
This was made known in a Media Advisory issued on 20th January, 2023.
The highlight of her journey will be the inauguration of Liberian President-elect Joseph Boakai, underscoring the U.S. government’s dedication to fostering ties with the newly elected administration after a successful democratic transition.
During her stay in Monrovia, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield plans to address the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, delving into the challenges democracy faces in Africa. Drawing on her previous role as Ambassador to Liberia, she aims to emphasize the role of civilian-led democracies in delivering for their people.
Turning her attention to Guinea-Bissau, the Ambassador will engage with President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, focusing on discussions surrounding regional security and reinforcing the commitment to bolstering bilateral relations.
However, the spotlight of the tour remains on Sierra Leone, where Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield is scheduled to meet with President Julius Maada Bio.
The discussions will center on Sierra Leone’s return to the UN Security Council and delve into various bilateral and multilateral issues.
Her agenda in Freetown includes dialogues with government and opposition leaders, as well as the international community, emphasising the ongoing implementation of the Agreement for National Unity.
Additionally, she plans to visit the Sierra Leone Peace Museum, aligning with shared priorities between Sierra Leone and the United States, including women and youth empowerment, climate change, and health.
This diplomatic voyage aligns with the Biden Administration’s overarching goals for Africa, reinforcing commitments to democracy, empowering women and youth, promoting regional peace and security, and advocating for inclusive and sustainable development across the continent.
