Cyber attacks in recent time have become a serious global threat which requires urgent cyber security measures. The UK government believes it is critical that the international community come together to address cyber threats by bringing out meaningful solutions.
Alistair White is the acting British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone who said that the former British Prime Minister approved 15 million Pound Sterling to support development programmes, and that 5 million Pound Sterling of the aforementioned amount will be used for supporting the move to strengthen cyber security in Sierra Leone and four other countries.
It is no secret that advance technology has changed the paradigm of communication, business transactions and how information is being used. According to Alistair White these information in the wrong hands pose serious threats to democracy, elections, financial transactions and even commercial infrastructure.
The Minister of Information and Communication Mohamed Rahman Swaray (Rado) said the Attorney General’s office among other strides made is currently drafting a bill for cyber security legislation. He added that the outcome of the risk assessment survey will pave a roadmap to develop strong mechanisms to strengthen cyber security and prevent vulnerability and all sorts of threats relating to cyber attacks.
As Sierra Leone is one of 53 countries that signed the Cyber Declaration Document in 2018, the workshop was to launch the cyber security risk assessment survey that is aimed at developing an action plan to prevent vulnerability of eminent cyber attacks on the country.
