United States appoints Sierra Leonean as Fulbright Specialist

A Sierra Leonean, Professor of Economics, Dr. Abdul M. Turay, was recently recommended to serve as a Fulbright Specialist by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and World Learning Program.

During his time as a Fulbright Specialist, Dr. Turay will have the opportunity to work with colleagues and universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone. He aims to establish a more functional and contemporary infrastructure to implement a Teaching-Research Nexus for business and economic curriculum.

Dr. Turay will serve a three-year rotation with the program.

Dr. Turay is Professor of Economics. He joined the faculty in the School of Business in 2012.  Prior to coming to Kentucky State University, Professor Turay was a Visiting Research Professor at the Executive Ph.D. Program at Jackson State University, Provost and VPAA at Tougaloo College, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Western Carolina University and Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville respectively.

He also served as Chair and Professor of Economics at Radford University, and Professor of Economics and International Trade at Mississippi State University.  At Mississippi State he also served as Assistant to the Provost and VPAA.

Professor Turay has written on topics related to International Trade, International Finance, Economic Development, National and International Security.

He has received several awards and distinctions including: Distinguished Scholar at the Southwest Economic Association’s 93rd Annual Meeting, 2013; Fulbright Senior Fellow, 1991 (Declined to accept the Chair of Economics position at Radford University); Malone Faculty Fellow: National Council on U.S. Arab Relations, 1990; Outstanding Teaching Award, Mississippi State University, 1988; Phi Kappa Phi, 1988; Beta Gamma Sigma, 1980; Omicron Delta Epsilon, 1974.

Professor Turay has served on several Associations, Boards and Committees including: Board of Directors, Kentucky Employee Credit Union, 2013 – present; Committee member, Downtown Frankfort, Main Street Committee, 2012-present; Member and Past President, Southwest Social Sciences Association; Editor, Southwestern Journal of Economics, 1985 – present; Chair, College of Business and Computer Science, KSU Strategic Planning Committee, 2012 – present.

Professor Turay has taught several courses including: Principles of Economics (Macro and Micro); International Economics; International Business and Economic Development.

Degrees and Certifications include Ph.D. The University of Oklahoma, M.A. Atlanta University and B.A. Morehouse College.
