Chairman and Leader of the Unity Party in Sierra Leone, Madam Femi-Claudius Cole has called for diaspora voting in the country’s elections.

Madam Cole made this call during her first Town Hall in London, United Kingdom.

One of the key purposes of the meeting was to introduce the Unity Party to Sierra Leoneans in the Diaspora.

Sierra Leoneans in London attended the meeting in person, while some joined online to hear what the Unity Party leader had to say.

Madam Cole talked on the importance of giving Sierra Leoneans in the Diaspora, the chance to have a say in the electoral processes of Sierra Leone.

She said in past elections, Sierra Leoneans in the Diaspora have been disenfranchised, while I’m other countries, nationals residing in other countries are allowed to vote in elections.

Analysts say diasporas contribute to the development of many African countries, through the transfer of funds, skills, knowledge and experience. So, disenfranchising them is bad.

Madam Cole encouraged the locals to ensure that the challenges faced during the previous election in Sierra Leone do not repeat itself.

She indicated that some people are not happy about some of the legislations passed in Sierra Leone but they appear not to have a voice to influence big changes.

She cited the recent legislations to abolish the jury system and the change to Sierra Leone’s electoral system to proportional representation as examples.

Madam Cole explained that the elected officials, including MPs and councillors, in Sierra Leone, must be held accountable.

She said the people must endeavour to know their elected officials, their track records and their reputations.

She urged Sierra Leoneans in the Diaspora to join her Party and contribute to its work in Sierra Leone.
