Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has called for sustained public vigilance in Sierra Leone’s fight against the MPOX outbreak, despite the country recording encouraging recovery figures.
Speaking during a visit to one of the main treatment facilities at the Police Training School in Hastings, Dr. Jalloh emphasised the importance of community engagement and early case detection.
“There is still a need for vigilant community outreach programs and public awareness efforts to ensure that suspected cases are taken to treatment facilities early,” he said.
The Vice President also commended the ongoing national response and highlighted promising recovery rates. “I was pleased to see the great progress first-hand on the response effort,” he noted.
He confirmed that approximately 1,630 people have recovered from the virus across the country in recent days, including 18 at the Hastings centre alone. He acknowledged that while new cases continue to emerge in the Western Area and other parts of the country, the coordinated treatment approach is showing tangible results.
VP Juldeh Jalloh also praised the collaborative work between government institutions and international development partners, attributing much of the response’s success to their joint efforts.
“Citizens can be sure of quality health care services at these treatment facilities thanks to the collaboration between government and our development partners,” he said.
He specifically recognised the contributions of the Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Agency, the Ministry of Finance, the World Bank, Gavi, WHO, and the World Food Programme for their role in strengthening the national health response.
