Executive Director of the Institute for Governance Reform, Andrew Lavallie has recommended that Sierra Leone move away from the ‘Winner-Takes-All’ electoral system.
He made several other recommendations to the country’s Tripartite Committee where he said his organisation had submitted five key recommendations to the Committee, including: “Holding the police accountable, establishing a swift justice system, ensuring the right to protest, changing the winner-takes-all electoral system, and implementing a transition law that includes swearing in the winner one month after the election and publishing disaggregated data.
Lavallie described the Tripartite Committee as a significant opportunity for electoral reform following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report. He stressed the importance of examining previous elections to make recommendations that satisfy citizens from all regions.
