Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has urged Sierra Leoneans to remain vigilant in the ongoing fight against the MPox virus, even as the country records significant improvements in recovery rates.

During an official visit to one of the major treatment centers at the Police Training School in Hastings, the Vice President praised the progress made so far and reiterated the critical role of community engagement and early case detection in curbing the spread of the disease.

“There is still a need for vigilant community outreach programs and public awareness efforts to ensure that suspected cases are taken to treatment facilities early,” Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh stated, emphasizing that public health safety must remain a national priority.

Highlighting recent statistics, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh disclosed that approximately 1,630 individuals have successfully recovered from MPox nationwide, with 18 recoveries recorded at the Hastings facility alone. He acknowledged that while new cases continue to be reported, especially in the Western Area and other regions, the country’s coordinated treatment strategy is yielding tangible results.

“I was pleased to see first-hand the great progress made in our national response efforts,” he said, commending the tireless work of healthcare professionals and frontline workers across the country.

The Vice President also lauded the collaborative efforts between Government institutions and international development partners, attributing much of the response success to their joint support.

“Citizens can be assured of quality health care services at these treatment facilities thanks to the collaboration between Government and our development partners,” he remarked.

He extended special appreciation to the Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Agency, the Ministry of Finance and key international partners, including the World Bank, Gavi, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), for their invaluable support in strengthening Sierra Leone’s health infrastructure and emergency response capabilities.

With the country managing an ongoing public health threat, the Vice President’s visit serves both as a morale booster and a reminder of the importance of sustained vigilance, collective responsibility and resilience in the face of health emergencies.
