Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio said the country’s economy grew by 4% in 2024, with inflation dropping from 54.5% to 9.38% and domestic revenue reaching NLe14.6 billion.

He was speaking at the State Opening of the Third Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone, where he revealed that his government is focused on domestic revenue mobilisation, curbing illicit financial flows, and diversifying the economy beyond donor support.

The president said an IMF-supported $243 million Extended Credit Facility signals growing international confidence, while outlining a bold and optimistic vision for the future of the country.

The president presented a comprehensive update on governance achievements while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, national stability, and prosperity.

He praised Parliamentarians for their bipartisan efforts over the past year, and emphasised the vital role of the legislature in shaping laws and policies that directly impact the lives of Sierra Leoneans. “This House is the beating heart of our democracy. It is here that we determine whether Sierra Leone’s future will be defined by unity and progress — or by division and delay”, he said.

The president used the occasion to highlight the key progress made under his government’s transformative development agenda, anchored on the Big Five Game Changers: Feed Salone, Human Capital Development, Youth Employment Scheme, Technology and Infrastructure Development, and Public Sector Reform.

“This is a government of action,” the president affirmed, adding, “the transformation is real. The journey is challenging. But together, we are building a Sierra Leone that is stronger, fairer, and full of opportunity”.
