The meeting that was geared towards empowering women brought together delegates from UNDP, Oxfam Senegal, UN Women  from Liberia, Uganda, Kenya, Senegal and the World Food Programme to see on how they can combat the issue of violence and empowering women so women can stand up for their rights.

The non-governmental organizations have made the issue of violence an overwhelming priority as women in all regions suffer multiple forms of abuse that must be eradicated.

As the 16 days campaign continues, the fight has heightened to eradicate violence against women as violence strikes women from all kinds of backgrounds and of all ages. It can happen at work, on the streets, or at home and can either be domestic and intimate partner violence, emotional abuse, human trafficking, same sex relation violence, sexual assault and abuse, stalking, violence against women and refugee women, violence against women at work and violence against women with disabilities.

Sometimes, women are attacked by strangers, but most often they are hurt by people that are very close to them such as their husbands or partners. Whether it’s an attack by strangers or mistreatment by a partner, violence and abuse can have terrible effects. A large percentage of women and girls globally experience some form of physical and sexual violence in their lifetime with up to seven in ten women facing this abuse in some countries.

Several issues surrounding women were discussed during the consultative meeting by using the facts that the United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The resolve of the day was to raise awareness over the fact that women around the world are subjected to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence stated above. One of the aims of the day was to highlight that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden.
