A tragic incident occurred in the afternoon of 16th September, 2024, when a seven storeys building collapsed along Shell Bai Bureh Road east of Freetown.
While two children were already rescued alive before press time, but sustaining wounds, unconfirmed reports said many other people, including women and children, were still trapped under the rubble, sparking a large-scale rescue operation.
The exact cause of the collapse was under investigation, but early reports suggested structural weaknesses, substandard iron rods and substandard building materials imported into the country could be a factor.
This disaster follows growing concerns about the quality of construction materials being used in the country.
As emergency responders work to save those trapped, the incident has ignited public outcry, with many demanding stricter regulations and oversight in the construction industry.
