International IDEA has signed two landmark Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) with the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) and the Parliament of Sierra Leone.
The signing marks a significant step toward strengthening legislative processes and promoting national peace.
Dr. Roba Sharamo, Regional Director for Africa and West Asia at International IDEA said the MoUs formalise a working relationship aimed at supporting the implementation of the Tripartite Committee recommendations – a set of governance and electoral reforms intended to deepen democracy and national stability in Sierra Leone following the country’s recent controversial national elections.
Dr. Roba Sharamo said: “The agreement with Parliament focuses on enhancing legislative drafting capacity to ensure inclusive lawmaking that aligns with the Tripartite Committee’s proposals. Meanwhile, our partnership with ICPNC is designed to strengthen national peace efforts through a fragility study and community engagement initiatives”.
The European Union’s backing of the SLDSP project reflects a broader commitment to reinforcing democracy and governance in Sierra Leone. Over the past decade, the country has made strides in media freedom, women’s political participation, and institutional reforms. However, challenges remain, including weak parliamentary oversight, electoral tensions, and limited public accountability.
The MoU with Parliament is expected to bolster legislative effectiveness, ensuring laws are transparent and inclusive, while the agreement with ICPNC will facilitate cross-community dialogue to promote social cohesion and conflict prevention.
As Sierra Leone works to implement the Tripartite Committee recommendations, partnerships between government, civil society, and international organizations will be crucial in ensuring lasting reforms and democratic stability.
The SLDSP initiative, funded by the European Union, continues to serve as a vital platform for strengthening institutions and fostering accountability. With the signing of these MoUs, International IDEA, Parliament, and ICPNC have reaffirmed their commitment to working together to build a more democratic, transparent, and peaceful Sierra Leone.
