Handing over the assorted items  which included, Rice, Onions, Salt, Toiletries,  Water, Oil,  Cash and some Learning  and teaching materials while monitoring the just concluded National Cleaning Exercise in the City, Mr. Brewah said he was moved by the plight of the inmates of the Milton School for the Blind during his last visit to the institution adding that his humanitarian gesture to the National School for the Blind came as a result of an appeal made by two social groups, Y.C.G  and Tewoh for him to visit during the last cleaning exercise. Amidst thunderous applause, the minister expressed his profound determination to help alleviate the sufferings of the disabled and consented to serve as their ambassador. He promised to engage other development partners including the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and Commission for People with Disability with a view to addressing their problems. “I shall knock all doors and windows of opportunity to cater for you” he pledged while entreating them to be focused, courageous, have faith in God and bear in mind that all is not lost. In his statement, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Lawrence Leema, assured the beneficiaries of government’s determination to provide the enabling environment that would help alleviate their sufferings. Whilst commending the minister of Local Government for the donation, Mr. Leema appreciated the courage showed by the disabled and promised to emulate the minster’s gesture.  He spoke of government’s commitment to putting proactive security measures in place and assured all of peaceful holidays. The Deputy National Secretary General of the Ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party, Sheku Lexmond Koroma, underscored the need to always care for the disabled and pledged his unflinching support to them.  The Chief Administrator, Freetown City Council, Festus Kallay, said he was very much touched by the disabled musical performance and encouraged them to always strive to improve their talents. A representative from the Civil Society Organisations,  Saio Lamin said as Human Rights Activists, they will continue to advocate for the disabled to ensure their institutions are given the necessary attention. Coordinator of the National Cleaning Exercise, Hindowa Bindi who chaired the programmes, re-echoed government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that the problems of disabled are fully addressed. Receiving the items,  the Principal of the Milton Margai School for the Blind, Sallieu Turay, gave a brief historic sketch of the school which he said commenced operation in 1956 after it was named after the former Prime Minister of Sierra Leone, Sir Milton Margai. He said the first President of the country to visit the school since its inception was the late President Ahmad Tejan Kabba of the SLPP. He thanked the minster of Local Government for the support and looked forward to the visit of President Julius Maada Bio to their School. Head Teacher of the National School for the Deaf, Winifred Kamara Cole,  expressed appreciation for the gesture and appealed for more including  provision of additional classrooms that would cater for pupils interested in vocational skills. Save our children from becoming ‘Drop outs’, she pleaded. The Prograamme which was attended by a cross-section of management staff of the ministry of Local Government and other key government functionaries also witnessed captivating musical performances by pupils from both schools.
