The Field Coordinator, Ana Zamacona, said they went to Kabala in January and started reinforcing the hospital triage and IPC, cleaning of wards, waste supervision and management, working on water supply and electricity, among others. She said MSF decision to support the maternity section of the hospital was as a result of the high rate of maternal and infant mortality in the district been the biggest with 72 Peripheral Health Units (PHU’s) with dispatch population.
Ana said the district government hospital was without health actor, according to indicator, which was why they decided to support the maternity and pediatrics with laboratory, triage and IPC as measures to prevent flow of diseases. She said they are supporting deliveries, hospitalization of pregnancy complicated cases before and after delivery, neonatal services and provision of free medical treatment, drugs and laboratory test.
In pediatric, she said, they are also giving support on hospitalization and free medical treatment for children from zero to 12 years with free medical treatment, drugs and laboratory tests.
She said the three year project is being supported by MSF and it will be implemented together with the Ministry of Health in Koinadugu with the aim of reducing infant and maternal mortality in that part of the country by end of the project and also delivery free treatment to pregnant women and children from Zero to 12 years. She said the project will be extended to Mongo this year and Neya Chiefdom next year as well for mothers and children to reach health centers on time.
Ana said they are working with national and International staff, pointing out that among their international staff are coordinators, doctors, nurses, logisticians, medical staff, administrators, Gynecologists, etc. and for national staff they are working with MSF recruited staff and the Ministry of Health staff and the District Health Management Team (DHMT), midwives, nurses, non-medical personnel, among others.
