These projects are part of SLADEA’s contribution to improve the living conditions of the marginalized within the Western Area Rural District and are funded by Aurora Foundation in Iceland and Bread for the World in Germany to transform the non-literate and the passive majority of the population.
Project Coordinator at SLADEA, Sheku Mansaray said SLADEA is a NGO established as a membership organization in 1978 with a mission to reduce the high rate of illiteracy among adults in the non-formal sector.
President of SLADEA, Dr. Joe A. D Alie said most young people are unskilled and untrained and therefore unable to find a place in the modern economy. He added that it is because of such reasons that SLADEA has opened many Continuing Education Centres (CECs) where young people are provided with training in life skills.
He added that the mission of SLADEA is to reduce the high rate of illiteracy as it is a major hindrance to social, economic and political progress among Sierra Leonean adults and to empower them through functional adult education programmes and activities.
One of the beneficiaries of the Lettie Staurt Pottery/ceramic Centre, Fatmata Lakkoh said she has been empowered by the project and life has changed for her.
“This project has changed my life for good because life has not been easy for me. But with what I have learned, I am grateful,” she said.
