Hawanatu Hawa Koroma, accused of setting her husband, Nabieu Bangura, on fire, appeared in Pademba Road Court No. 2 and was remanded into custody. The murder trial follows a tragic incident that reportedly occurred in November 2024 at their Leicester Peak residence.
Koroma faces one count of murder for allegedly killing her husband on November 22, 2024, near Leicester Peak Junction, Hill Station.
During the court hearing, a key prosecution witness, Saidu Bangura—the younger brother of the deceased—provided a harrowing account of events leading to his brother’s death.
Saidu testified that he received a distressing phone call from Moses Kamara, who informed him of Nabieu’s severe burn injuries.
Saidu said that upon rushing to Connaught Hospital, his brother disclosed that his wife, Hawanatu, was responsible for setting him on fire.
According to the witness, the incident stemmed from a heated argument after Nabieu returned home from work.
Hawanatu reportedly accused him of infidelity, prompting Nabieu to avoid further confrontation by sleeping in his shop. While he was asleep, Hawanatu allegedly poured a flammable liquid over him, set him on fire, and locked the door. Neighbors intervened, breaking down the door to rescue Nabieu and rushed him to the hospital.
Medical reports indicated that Nabieu sustained 90% burns. After a week in intensive care, he succumbed to his injuries. Saidu confirmed his attendance at the postmortem examination and submitted photographic evidence of his brother’s charred remains to the court.
During the proceedings, the accused, who was without legal representation, declined to question the witness.
