The Head of Communications at the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet), Success Ibrahim SeiKamara, has disclosed that the agency has identified seven-two vulnerable communities across Freetown as part of efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and early warning systems.
He revealed that local volunteers have been trained and equipped with rain gauges to monitor rainfall levels in real time and report data that could help predict and respond to potential flooding and other weather-related emergencies.
According to him, the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to improve community-based climate monitoring and reduce the risks posed by extreme weather events, particularly in flood-prone areas of the capital.
Mr. Kamara emphasised that timely and accurate rainfall data from community volunteers will enhance the country’s ability to issue early warnings, support disaster response planning, and protect lives and property.
He added that the programme also aims to build resilience at the community level by empowering residents to take an active role in weather monitoring and disaster risk reduction.
The Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency continues to expand its outreach and data collection systems as part of national efforts to improve climate services and strengthen preparedness against environmental hazards.
