In an interview with AYV newspaper, many physically challenged persons pointed out that they are faced with numerous challenges in the home and on the streets. Edward A. Charles claimed that society in general and the Government of Sierra Leone in particular, have abandoned them to their fate.

He recounted that being persons with disability with no job and home, they expect the government to provide free healthcare facility, scholarships and transportation that will be friendly to them.

He maintained that the government is only using them when it comes to election; promising them heaven on earth, after which nothing is done to improve their life standard.

Others complained they are tired running behind vehicles and begging on the streets of the capital. They suggested society should consider them as important people.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. Observance of the day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities.

The estimated one billion people living with disabilities worldwide face many barriers to inclusion in many key aspects of society, as a result, people with disabilities do not enjoy access to society on an equal basis with others, which includes areas of transportation employment, and education as well as social and political participation.
