Before the election, inside sources said that all the flag-bearer aspirants had agreed that they should find a candidate to challenge Brig. (Rtd.) Julius Maada Bio and that only the delegates supporting the Alliance were eligible to vote in that election.

The contest, according to sources, was restricted to two candidates from the North/West and two from the South/East respectively. After the North/West election was conducted with Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella polling 99 votes and Lawyer Alpha Timbo a distant 51 votes, the two candidates from the South/East, Engineers Andrew Keili and their delegates did not see the need to conduct an election but to support Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella to challenge Brig. (Rtd.) Julius Maada Bio for the 2018 presidential candidacy to be decided at the National Delegates’ Conference sometime in April this year.

The losing candidate, Lawyer Alga Timbo, is reported to have accepted the election result in good faith and for peace and unity to reign in the SLPP.

Meanwhile, John Oponjo Benjamin, Who was part if the Alliance, has written an official letter to colleague flag-bearer aspirants in the AAA announcing his break from the Alliance after his alleged consultation with what he referred to in his letter as JOB Team at home and globally.

JOB believes that his colleagues have compromised the rule of law and that they don’t believe in their primary objective of contesting for the flag-bearer position.

While JOB dissociated himself from the Alliance, he however assured that he would continue supporting the peace process in the SLPP together with his supporters at home and the Diaspora.
