The Global Times newspaper has reported that a senior member of the Parliamentary Commission informed the media house that allegations that the Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Umar Paran Tarawally, knowingly recruited his wife, Mrs. Abibatu Parana Tarawally, as a staff of Parliament “are completely vacuous”.

She noted that, Hon. Paran Tarawally was in fact out of the country when his spouse was lawfully recruited as a staff of Parliament by the Director of Human Resource in 2021.

According to her, when Hon. Paran Tarawally returned from vacation and discovered that his wife had been recruited as a staff of Parliament, he took immediate steps to reprimand the Director of Human Resource by first suspending him, placing him on half salary and later getting him fired for not disclosing details about the recruitment of his (Clerk’s wife) as a staff of Parliament.

Mrs. Abibatu Parana Tarawally started working in Parliament when her husband was still on vacation in 2021. She fell ill and was officially granted sick leave to enable her proceed to Turkey and later India for medical checkup.

The source clarified that, Mrs. Abibatu Parana Tarawally has refunded 90% of the money she received as salary from the Accountant General’s Department.

The allegations that Hon. Paran Tarawally was directly involved or was aware of the recruitment of his wife as a staff of Parliament have been described as “utterly absurd and totally misleading”.

The Anti-Corruption Commission is currently investigating allegations of Sexual Harassment, Conflict of Interest, Abuse of Office, Embezzlement and a wide range of corrupt activities allegedly involving some senior leaders of Parliament.
