“Sierra Leone for instance around 8,000 fake sim cards are in use by just a single mobile company, 7,800 fake mobile phones are in operation and 657,000 duplicate sim cards are in circulation.” Momoh Konteh emphasized.

Momoh Conteh said it has become an alarming trend which called for a cause for concern, as the existence of these abnormalities in telecommunication has a negative effect in the dissemination of information to the public. He mentioned the odds of social media among which are spreading of fake news, sharing of indecent images and demeaning personalities of people.

He reiterated that a lot of social media users are contradicting the ethical standard in information sharing and that as a way of maintain sanity in the use of social media there should be a monitoring system to track defaulters.

In what could be described as the peak of his lecture, was when he stated that all social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and among others might be blocked three months before elections if ethical considerations on telecommunications use are not adhered to. He cited the examples of some African countries which have done likewise in the midst of social media misuse.
