The Sierra Leone Police has said nothing of security interest was found in an unusual vessel resembling a customised mini-submarine, which was found abandoned along the Black Johnson coastal area in the early hours of January 18, 2025.

According to a press release issued by the Media and Public Relations Department of the Sierra Leone Police, the Security Sector received a tip-off about the vessel’s sighting near Yenkain Beach in the Black Johnson community.

“Personnel of the Naval Wing of the Security Sector immediately dispatched a crew to the location, where the vessel was secured and later towed to the Murray Town Navy Base for a thorough search,” the statement reads.

On January 19, between 9:00am and 11:00am, a joint search was conducted by personnel from various security institutions.

“The vessel’s three major compartments, including the captain’s cabin, were carefully searched by cutting through its body,” said the release.

Despite the rigorous efforts, officials confirmed that “nothing of security interest was found” inside the vessel. However, the vessel was handed over to the Marine Wing of the Sierra Leone Police for further investigation, including forensic analysis of swab samples.

“The public will be informed about any additional updates regarding the outcome of the ongoing police investigations,” the statement assured.

The Sierra Leone Police emphasised their dedication to maintaining law and order, with a spokesperson stating, “The security sector remains committed to providing an enabling environment for peace and security at all times.”
