The Koidu New Sembehun City Council has expressed deep concern over a series of unexplained earth vibrations that occurred on January 25 and January 30, 2025, sparking fear among residents.

In a letter addressed to the Executive Chairman of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the council highlighted multiple complaints from citizens about the tremors, which were experienced at approximately 9pm on January 25 and at midnight on January 30.

The incidents have raised serious concerns regarding their magnitude, frequency, and potential cause.

“The citizens are expressing serious fear and are also concerned over the magnitude and frequency of occurrence of the said earth vibration,” the letter stated.

The council emphasized its commitment to the well-being of Koidu residents, stressing that any potential threat to public safety must be treated with the utmost urgency. Officials fear that if left unaddressed, these tremors could lead to a disaster.

In response, the council has called on the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Office of National Security to conduct an expert investigation into the cause of the earth vibrations. The letter underscores the growing demand from residents for a clear explanation and immediate action.

As authorities await an official assessment, concerns remain high among the people of Koidu, with many speculating on possible links to ongoing mining activities in the area. The council has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring their safety and urges relevant institutions to intervene promptly.

Local residents continue to hope for swift action and a transparent investigation into the alarming tremors affecting their community.
