Thousands of hopeful candidates across Sierra Leone on Saturday took part in the nationwide recruitment entrance examination for the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), as the force seeks to bolster its ranks ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.

According to official figures, over 5,000 applicants, men and women alike, participated in the exams held simultaneously at five designated centres across the country’s five regions.

The SLP is looking to recruit 3,000 new officers from this pool as part of its ongoing efforts to expand and strengthen the force.

The move comes as part of a broader national security strategy aimed at ensuring a well-prepared and adequately staffed police force in the lead-up to the next electoral cycle.

Currently, the SLP has an estimated strength of 14,000 officers. However, the institution is targeting a total force of 25,000 personnel by 2028, with new recruits expected to undergo rigorous training and deployment over the coming years.

Police officials said the recruitment drive is not only focused on boosting numbers but also on enhancing professionalism and public confidence in the force.
