The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has warned of potential heavy rains and floods in Freetown these few days.

In its weather news updates of Wednesday 20th August, 2025, the BBC said, “There is heavy rain towards the far west of Africa, this will affect mostly parts of Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Guinea Bissau. Specifically, they will experience heavy rains as much as 150 millimetres over the next few days thatwould lead to flooding potentially”.

Similarly, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) in Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet), has issued an urgent public advisory warning of heavy rainfall forecasted to hit Sierra Leone over the next three days.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), “Heavy to moderate rainfall is expected across several parts of Sierra Leone, especially in the Northern and Western Regions, over the next three days”.

As a result, residents have been advised to observe key safety measures which include, staying away from flooded areas and bridges, moving away from flood-prone communities to safer ground when necessary, keeping children indoors and away from water channels, farmers taking steps to protect crops and livestock, and disposing of waste properly to avoid clogging drainages.

The National Disaster Management Agency has also askedconcerned citizens to call NDMA’s toll-free line 1199, available on all networks for emergency assistance.
