The Kabala/Makeni Highway, a vital link between two major districts in Sierra Leone, has become a death trap for passengers and a stark reminder of the country’s crumbling infrastructure.

Recent incidents, including public transport vehicles getting stuck and leaving passengers stranded, highlight the dire state of this road.

The highway’s deplorable condition not only poses a significant risk to the lives of commuters but also hampers economic activity in the region. Koinadugu district, where Kabala is located, is rich in various farm products and has immense tourism potential, but poor road infrastructure severely limits investment and growth.

Farmers struggle to transport their harvests to larger cities like Makeni, resulting in substantial financial losses, particularly during the rainy season. The state of the Kabala/Makeni Highway is a testament to the government’s failure to deliver quality services to its citizens. Politicians often make grand promises during election seasons, but once in office, they seem to forget about the plight of the people.

This neglect has left many Sierra Leoneans swimming in lakes of poverty, with poor social and economic infrastructure exacerbating the issue. Quality service delivery is not a privilege but a fundamental right of citizens. It is time for the government to prioritise infrastructure development and ensure that roads like the Kabala/Makeni Highway are safe and accessible. The people of Sierra Leone deserve better.

The condition of roads leading to other districts, such as Falaba, Karene, and Bonthe, is likely to be just as dire, given the state of the Kabala/Makeni Highway. The government must take immediate action to address these infrastructure challenges and ensure that all citizens have access to safe and reliable roads.
