Sierra Leone’s Minister of Transport and Aviation, Alhaji Fanday Turay, has confirmed that his government plans to return commercial train services to the country.
Speaking during the Civic Day Series in the United States of America, Minister Turay said, “His Excellency has a vision to also have a train in Sierra Leone. To accomplish that, we have already established an agency, and they will now begin the research. Once that is completed, they will engage business partners, and this is also an opportunity for our diaspora to come on board. If you know you have a connection with a company that would be interested in this project, please reach out to us after this briefing so we can move forward together”.
Minister Turay encouraged Sierra Leoneans with business connections in the transport sector in the Diaspora to link them with Sierra Leone.
He spoke on the government’s plans to expand transportation access to rural areas in Sierra Leone, while highlighting the decentralisation of licensing services, which are now available in every district across the country.
He said to reduce accidents on the country’s highways, his ministry has deployed a dedicated team that actively monitors traffic. He called on the public to also report issues through the hotline 844.
The minister spoke about the success of the Waka Fine buses, which transport 35,000 passengers daily, reducing congestion and promoting fast movement.
The introduction of pedestrian bridges and bus terminals with 24-hour electricity, Traffic lights at major intersections, and plans to reintroduce the railway system through a new National Railway Authority were also discussed. He also noted that the government is reviewing the $25 airport security tax.
