Sierra Leone has on 1st November, 2025 assumed its second and final Presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the January 2024 to December 2025 term.
It takes over from the Russian Federation, and for one month, will be leading the 15-member Council with a primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.
Last time the country assumed presidency was August 2024, following its return to the non-permanent category of the UNSC after a 53-year absence.
In addition to collectively pursuing sustainable resolutions to conflicts and addressing global challenges, Sierra Leone is also leading the push for reforms of the Council through the Africa Union Committee of 10 States (C-10) headed by President Dr. Julius Maada Bio.
C-10 seeks two permanent seats with veto power and two additional non-permanent seats for Africa.
This, as the President puts it, is to correct the historical injustice of not having a permanent member for Africa’s 1.2 billion people 80 years since the United Nations was established.
