The United States Government has warned the Sierra Leone government and governments of other countries that Passport Integrity is an important issue that has contributed largely to the proclamation of an entry ban into the US on many countries.
Quinn Lorenz, Consular Officer at the United States Embassy in Freetown, stated that for Sierra Leone, the ban applies to Sierra Leonean passport holders, and that could include other nationals, taking into account the passport the applicant is holding at the time of their application.
He said, “The US government is encouraging governments to ensure that holders of passports in their respective countries are people who have the right to hold those passports”, adding, “There is a lot of focus on Visa misuse and overstays in a non-immigrant Visa Category. This will be someone travelling for tourism purposes to the United States and then later adjusting status to potentially claim asylum or another immigrant category in the United States”.
He said these data are tracked frequently, and that if individuals are not using the visas as intended, that is something that the US government has an interest in because that is a violation of the US Immigration law.
The Consular Officer went on to say that overstays are a big focus of the US administration, but that in addition, it is the quality of documents – the government of Sierra Leone being able to produce reliable documents with reliable and verifiable information, specifically in the Immigrants Visa Process, which he said they rely heavily on documents.
He said, “If we as the Embassy cannot have confidence that we can verify those documents, and that information can be attributed to the applicant, then that’s a problem”.
